Sarah Odens received her BA in Art and English from the University of Sioux Falls, and her MFA at Michigan State University, where she was awarded a Dissertation Completion Fellowship from the College of Arts and Letters. Her paintings explore the social implications of online images of domestic perfection, transforming them into abstract musings on the joy and the futility of chasing that very perfection. Fragments from poems and online domestic sources filter into her work. Her uneasy fascination with online domesticity – often false, rigid, staged or idealized – permeates her paintings and speaks to the rough, undone edges of crumbling cakes and the dissolving fragments of floral arrangements.
The Sioux Falls Arts Council will feature Sarah Odens in their rotating art exhibit for the remainder of 2016. Odens will be on display from October 7th until the end of November. A short break will be taken from December 17th, 2016 to January 2nd, 2017 to prepare for a full year of rotations in 2017. Sioux Falls Imagined: A Cultural Plan for a Vibrant and Prosperous City, approved by the City of Sioux Falls in July 2014, named the Sioux Falls Arts Council as the organization given the charge of implementing the plan. From the Artists and Creative Workers task force findings, a strong need identified for the local art community was alternative exhibition space(s). The Featured Artist Exhibit at the Sioux Falls Arts Council office opened in May 2016 as a way to start filling this need.
The Sioux Falls Arts Council, located in the Crane Centre at 8th & Railroad 326 E 8th St #106A, is open Monday-Friday 10:00 am – 3:00 pm, First Fridays 5:00 – 7:00 pm, and by appointment.
The 2017 Call for Artists has ended. 2017 Featured Artists will be announced by November 29th.
