Plains. This exhibition featuring horses of the Northern Plains runs August 2, 2022 – November 18, 2022.
The history of the Northern Plains cannot be told without the presence of the Horse. Brought to North America by European explorers in the 1400s, horses quickly became a prized animal by Native Americans and European settlers. Since their introductions to the Northern Plains, horses have solidified themselves as a crucial component to our life and culture.
Similarly, artwork of the Northern Plains region often highlights the importance of horses. Dating back centuries, horses have often been the primary subject of Northern Plains artwork. Thus, the Center for Western Studies is humbled to present Stallions and Mares – Legends of the Plains featuring artwork highlighting horses of the Northern Plains. This juried art exhibition features 47 pieces from 40 artists.
