Sioux Falls 4th graders join SDSO for debut of Carnegie Hall’s Link Up Program

Sioux Falls, S.D. — On Monday, March 13, 2017, at 9:45am, more than 1,800 4th graders from the Sioux Falls Public Schools (with their recorders) will join the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra (SDSO) at the Washington Pavilion for the South Dakota premier of Carnegie Hall’s Link Up program. Link Up, a program of Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, pairs orchestras with students at schools in their local communities to explore orchestral repertoire and fundamental musical skills through a hands-on music curriculum. At the concert, all students will demonstrate what they have learned by singing and playing recorder with the orchestra.

Dr. Boyd Perkins, Coordinator of Fine and Performing Arts for the Sioux Falls School District, spoke highly of the program: “The Sioux Falls School District is excited to be participating in this program and partnering with the SDSO, as music is an important part of the whole child development. The Link Up curriculum is a big hit in our music classrooms and is tailored to every level of learning and ability. Our students are excited to be able to perform with the SDSO at the final concert in the Washington Pavilion!”

Jennifer Boomgaarden, Executive Director of the SDSO, said: “The SDSO is privileged to partner with the Sioux Falls Public School District and Carnegie Hall to make Link Up a reality in South Dakota.  Link Up is the newest addition to the wide array of SDSO educational programs that serve pre-school children through adults. Each year, the SDSO introduces over 15,000 new concert-goers to the orchestra through its educational and community engagement programming, living its commitment to serve its unique community.”

Over 1,800 4th grade students from 22 Sioux Falls Public Schools are participating! 100 students who have been nominated by their teachers will be performing on stage with the SDSO. The remainder of the students will participate from their seats in the concert hall. For more information on how your school can become a Link Up partner in 2017/18, contact the SDSO at (605) 335-7933 or sdsymphony@sdsymphony.org.

Please note, the concert is NOT open to the public but will be televised on SDPB and KLRN at a later date.
