The SFAC features a new visual artist every two months in an effort to give artists who have not yet had a solo exhibition in Sioux Falls the chance to do so. Artists are selected by a panel of jurors and are then presented to the public in a celebratory open house. These events are free and open to the public. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be available.
Join us October 5th, 2018 as we welcome visual artist and graphic designer, Joe Schaeffer into the Sioux Falls Arts Council Community Gallery.
Joe’s artwork is grounded in his background of graphic design.
“In graphic design as well as drawing and painting, I enjoy the intuitive nature of decision making that is grounded in the principles of design, such as composition, color, repetition, etc.
Drawing and painting has challenged me to let go of the control that typically occurs in my design work. In an act of intentional departure from the calculated decision-making of graphic design, I am allowing spontaneity and improvisation take hold of various mediums such as ink, oil, acrylic, and spray paint. Movements and styles such as graffiti, abstract/neo-expressionism, and art brut all have influenced me in creating my own visual language.”
Joe’s open house will be from 5 to 7PM with an artist talk at 6PM.
The SFAC is wheelchair accessible from the back entrance of the Crane Centre.
The Featured Visual Artist Program is rooted in Sioux Falls Imagined, our community’s long-term cultural plan.
