The SFAC features a new visual artist every two months in an effort to give artists who have not yet had a solo exhibition in Sioux Falls the chance to do so. Artists are selected by a panel of jurors and are then presented to the public in a celebratory open house. These events are free and open to the public.
Join us May 18th, 2018 as we welcome visual artist Jenny Bye into the Sioux Falls Arts Council Community Gallery.
Jenny Bye is a local visual artist who works primarily with encaustic art. Encaustic is a Greek word that means to heat or burn in.
“I make my own paints by combining a mixture of raw pigments, melted beeswax, and damar resin crystals. By making my paints, I control the pigment load and adjust the opacity or transparency of the mixture as needed. Because of the transparent qualities, durability and versatility of the medium, I paint in layers, fused by heat. Scraping away layers, reveals the underlying structure. Since I rarely do a preliminary sketch, the spontaneous energy of each piece, is captured in the hardened wax. The addition of collage materials, is often an intricate application adding interest and dimensionality.”
Jenny’s open house will be from 5 to 7PM with an artist talk at 6PM.
The SFAC is wheelchair accessible from the back entrance of the Crane Centre.
The Featured Visual Artist Program is rooted in Sioux Falls Imagined, our community’s long-term cultural plan.
