The SFAC features a new visual artist every two months in an effort to give artists who have not yet had a solo exhibition in Sioux Falls the chance to do so. Artists are selected by a panel of jurors and are then presented to the public in a celebratory open house. These events are free and open to the public.
Join us March 2, 2018 as we welcome visual artist Lauren Anderson into the Sioux Falls Arts Council Community Gallery.
‘Through a happy accident’ Lauren stumbled upon a new way of painting in which she has only begun to explore. This accident came in the form of coffee, which has become the basis of most of her mixed media paintings. It has been an unexpected realization that anything can be used to create art. She starts her paintings by using coffee to create general outlines. As the coffee dries she is left with wonderful and strange gradients. Each brings something new and exciting to the piece and results in a sort of time-capsule that preserves not only her mood, but mediums from her surroundings.
“I am interested in how colors and shapes reflect such complicated concepts such as emotions and ideas. I particularly gravitate towards abstract art for its intrinsic nature to be interpreted in an infinite amount of ways. I am fascinated by what others tell me they see, feel, think, and interpret from my work.”
Lauren’s open house will be from 5 to 7PM with an artist talk at 6PM.
The SFAC is wheelchair accessible from the back entrance of the Crane Centre.
The Featured Visual Artist Program is rooted in Sioux Falls Imagined, our community’s long-term cultural plan.
